Cedar privacy fences in Yakima, built on metal posts
Horizontal or vertical cedar, a matching gate, and posts that keep the line straight. Dustin Owen walks the yard first, then bids the job himself.
Chapter 01
Where a privacy fence gives up first
A privacy fence is a long, solid wall standing in the wind, and the boards are rarely what fails first. The line fails. A post leans, a run starts to sag between supports, and the gate stops latching because the opening has drifted out of square. From the street it still looks like a fence, but the part you use every day is the part that fights you.
That is why the posts matter more than the lumber. Donald Farmer wrote about a wind storm that left his mother-in-law’s fence and gate severely damaged, and about calling around to companies that showed no interest in the job. A cedar fence built to hold its line is the one you do not have to make that call about. The boards are what the neighbors see. The metal posts inside the line are what keep it from walking.

How MF Fencing builds a cedar run
It starts with Dustin Owen standing in your yard. Jim Hilton wrote that Dustin looked the job over, asked what he was thinking and made suggestions that made everything work better. On a cedar job that means settling where the line runs, how tall it goes, whether the boards run horizontal for a wrapped-in, modern look or vertical for the classic line, and where the gate opens and what it has to swing past.
The fence is built on metal posts with cedar hung on them. MF Fencing’s own job photos show both looks: horizontal cedar around a hot tub on a paver patio, and horizontal boards stepping down a garden line so each section follows the ground instead of fighting it. Cindy Byrne, who had a cedar fence built to specific functions and dimensions along her fence line, said the crew kept her up to date on the project the whole way.
The gate is built as part of the fence, not bolted on after. The one in the photo on this page is a matching cedar Z-brace gate with black hardware, so it reads as one piece with the run. If cedar is not what you want, MF Fencing has also built white vinyl privacy fence; ask Dustin about it on the visit.
Chapter 03
Keeping a cedar fence straight after the install
Cedar is a natural board, and natural boards move. The color changes with sun and weather, and a board can pull a little as it dries. That is the material, not a defect, and a well-built fence lets the boards do it without dragging the line out of shape.
What is worth watching is the structure: a gate that starts to rub or drag, a run that leans after a storm, a board that has worked loose from its rail. All of it is easier to fix early than late. Dustin says as much on the MF Fencing Facebook page, where in late September he wrote, “Fence gremlins are out and about with the weather change.”
If your cedar fence has started to lean, or a gate no longer closes right, call (509) 594-9013 and ask for Dustin. A message on the Facebook page works too, and he will come out to Yakima and the Yakima Valley to look at it.
“The natural beauty of the cedar is spectacular and the hidden strength of the metal posting is brilliant”. Cindy Byrne, Google review. MF Fencing LLC is licensed (WA L&I MFFENFL804RS), insured and bonded.
